And I hope you enjoy this exclusive bonus content from the Career Warrior Podcast. Should you stay or leave your company? This is a big question that a lot of job Seekers have in test. Iknow inyour book. You have a whole conclusion or a whole chapter devoted to this big question. So if you have a job Seeker who approaches you with this question, should you stay or leave your company? What is the first thing that you would tell that person? Thefirst thing I ask them is, why, why do you have to go?
Tessa White (03:01):
Because I tell you, nine out of 10 people say I just can’t stand it anymore and I’m like, what is it, what is it? Because unless you understand what the it is, you are bound to repeat the same problem. If your As you say, you’re overworked, then you’re going to repeat that at the same company that the next company. Unless you understand that, that is what you do because you’re going togo in with guns blazing and show them how great you are and then you’re going to have ahard time pulling back. So people need to understand what they actually value in acompany and where they thrive.
And I make them do avalues analysis before they go. I make them. Understand how much do I value learning and growing autonomy. Ability. How much risk am Iwilling to take entrepreneurial risk in acompany? How important arethe relationships and thepeople in those five areas are incredibly important and when you rate yourself on how important those are to you and then rate your company against those.
Same things for me, I learned, oh my gosh, I outgrew my company. It used tobe a fit but the “it” for me is that I like building? I don’t like maintaining. That’s why I’m unhappy. I realize in the lightbulb went on. I go to companies where I build something. Yeah, I like the chaos but I can’t go to a company that’s already running smoothly, or I’m bored out ofmy mind. So you have to understand the it and what people do isthey go to glass, doors, top 50 companies and think if they pick one of them are going to live happily ever after. And it’s just not that way.
Yeah, I love that. It makes you go deeper and asking like you get alittle bit more substance before making adecision because Ithink the mistake that somebody would make and this is something you mentioned before is rushing to quickly on over to that next thing. Then it ends up biting you in thebutt way. Worse than the situation you had before that. So to tell people to slow down the process Ithink is really wise and to cause them to do a little bit more introspection there. Yeah. Speed is the anime when it comes to moving companies. Mmm. Yeah.
And yet when we’re uncomfortable or in pain, we want to get out of it. So that’s why I understand why people go fast, but there’s so much value in slowing it down. There’s so many more choices that people actually realize. There’s like five or six choices, not just One it’s not. Do I stay or go? There’s yeah there’s only 10 between four variations. Yeah I’ll tell you itlike again I can’t build the perfect analogy between little bit of that asking why I was unhappy with the certain situation and I was thinking about dropping one of the parts of my job that historically.
I’ve cared about so much I’m like I’m gonna quit this. I’m so over it I’m the sick of it and it would feel so awesome and freeing if I just like let go of it but I realized that it was the workflow. Whoa, that I didn’t like about it. It was like how Iwas doing, it was causing me to be rushed and it just ended up not being fun for me. So in that sense that is what saved me is like for me to slow down and realize that’s exactly what I wanted to have that future life in which my workflow is improved, not leaving it all together.
So well so often Ithink it’s natural for us to go the easiest course to get out ofthe pain and the easiest course is always go. All got start over, I’ll just go find another job and or I’ll disconnect I’m the one I’m doing and just quiet. Quit but really, I mean I’ve had periods of my career where I’ve had to, I’ve decided I need tostay and I have to reinvent myself, which is another option. It’s actually, when all is said and done the effort to do that and to stay is about the same as the effort to move.
When you move companies, expect to spend about 25% extra effort, finding the job, and then proving yourself and we forget about that. We just want toget out of the immediate pain. But if you were going to take about the same, Same amount of energy that could yield just as successful as aresult. It makes alot ofsense. Could you talk just one more time just in case anyone missed it? What is the values analysis? And how to use it and making a critical decision like this?
Yes. So in the book, there’s actually a worksheet that you use and I do this with my rent, my brain clients all the time, it’s learning and growing. How important is that process to me to always be learning number two, what is my tolerance for risk entrepreneurial risk? Me, somebody telling me how to do the job versus me being able to do it the way I want flexibility, which is speaks to work hours and whether you want to be in the office 9:00 to 5:00 or whether you have tohave some flexibility and people the relationships. Gosh. Yeah. Those were your speaking to some of the things and some of the elements that were impacting my decision to either leave or not.
Leave that one task or that one really big part ofmy job. So I think that is awesome. Yeah I think it’s really really useful tool for people. Evil and Ilove analysis. You know, you’ll see that in the book, I love data, I love analysis. And Ithink that’s a good thing to apply data and Analysis to something that big. Hey guys, thank you so much for tuning in to today’s exclusive bonus content. I hope you enjoyed it. Make sure to leave me a comment on LinkedIn.
