This month, we talked to Kelli Crawford, a senior resume writer who has been writing for Let’s Eat, Grandma since 2022.

Hi, Kelli! How long have you been a professional resume writer? Why did you decide to apply to become a Let’s Eat, Grandma resume writer?
I started writing for LEG in April 2022. Previously, I worked in HR so I had a lot of experience reading resumes, and I always had to fight the urge to edit them! Luckily, I became a mentor to incoming entry-level employees and offered resume critiques during career coaching sessions. I left corporate America in 2019 and focused on creative pursuits (acting, writing novels, scripts, and essays, and rebuilding my voiceover resume). The wild ups and downs of the industry led me to pursue freelance gigs. I had already been writing and editing resumes for 2 years in a freelance capacity when I found LEG. The opportunity to have support from editors and other writers was too good to pass up.
What’s your favorite part about resume writing at Let’s Eat, Grandma?
I have to mention support again. LEG provides a wealth of policies and guidelines with helpful, impactful information. I’ve learned so much about creating documents that pop and honing dense material into bite-size bullet points that pack a punch. I enjoy the variety of clients and industries too. I’ve written resumes for construction crew leaders, scientific research and development experts, professors in academia, travel agents, accountants, and C-suite executives. They’re all interesting! I love helping clients rediscover why they love the work they do and helping them see their incredible accomplishments. The need for a new resume stems from loss or impending loss of current work. The emotion of that (whether good or bad) can make it easy to forget how great they are and what they’ve achieved. Sometimes an outside perspective is needed to elevate their job search documents.
You also complete Executive Concierge Service packages. Is there anything different or notable about working with these clients?
They tend to have a firm grasp on, and a great sense of humor about, their work and accomplishments. They’ve had robust experiences, successes and failures, and still have passion. They’re able to articulate the important information behind the accomplishments: the “how” of it all. They have great stories and it’s easy to cover a lot of ground in a short time. Our conversations are focused on career path, personality and leadership skills, and why they’re making a move now. I enjoy leaning into their personality traits because it gives me the extra insight I need to paint a detailed picture of their history.
What is the most challenging part about resume writing?
Definitely the learning curve. When I need to write smart, engaging bullet points for an industry that’s completely foreign to me I end up doing my own research prior to the call. I’ve written hundreds of resumes at this point but I’m always learning. And I love that so maybe it’s not a challenge! Maybe a better answer is formatting – the copying and pasting. That’s my least favorite part.
Do you have any hobbies? What is your favorite thing to do when you’re not writing resumes 🙂
As an artist, whenever I’m not working I’m working. Most of my free time is spent writing or editing my novels, scripts, and essays or in acting class. I love to travel, listen to music, chase my cat around the house, and watch really, really good TV. On Sunday mornings I cook meals for the week while listening to jazzy international music. That’s my zen time. Fun fact: I can sing songs in French, Spanish, and Italian. I come from a family of food lovers. We eat lunch and talk about what we’re going to eat for dinner. I’ve been trying to perfect my crab cake recipe for years. I’m very close!
What advice can you give for anyone considering purchasing a resume writing service and working with a professional resume writer?
First, congratulations on deciding to hire a professional. In this world of AI and ATS and other acronyms, nothing compares to working with a professional resume writer who knows the best tricks and can add a personal touch to get your resume read by a human being (rather than sorted into the cyber trash bin). Second, always read reviews. Previous clients can give you a lot of information about what they experienced and why it was good (or not). And finally, if it sounds too good to be true – it is. Research top 10 lists, read the reviews, and go with your gut. You will end up in the right place.
