Interested in a Let’s Eat, Grandma resume, and curious about who you’ll work with? Read on for an interview with one of our professional resume writers, Jane Harkness.
Here at Let’s Eat, Grandma, we’re extremely proud of our talented and diverse team of professional resume writers.
That’s why we started this series, where our Managing Editor sits down with each one to discuss their background, motivation, and what they love best about writing resumes.
This month, we talked to Jane, an executive resume writer who has been writing for Let’s Eat, Grandma since 2023.
How long have you been writing resumes? Why did you decide to apply to become a Let’s Eat, Grandma resume writer?
I joined LEG in October 2023. I started writing resumes in early 2021 – with so many people dealing with layoffs during the COVID-19 pandemic, there was a high demand. I had previously written content for recruiting agencies and job search platforms, and I realized I could use the skills I’d developed as a freelance writer to help people land new roles. I frequently came across LEG’s resources when I looked up resume writing guidelines, and when I noticed that they were hiring resume writers, I decided to reach out!
What’s your favorite part about resume writing at Let’s Eat, Grandma?
Getting to know my clients through the consultation! Everyone has an interesting story behind their unique career path, and no two clients are the same. Many people don’t know how to describe their achievements and skills on a resume, and lots of clients don’t realize just how much they’ve accomplished until we start discussing their career history in detail and digging into metrics that show just how capable they are.
You also complete Executive Concierge Service packages. Is there anything different or notable about working with these clients?
Executive clients often have several decades of experience in their fields, so refining their resumes to hone in on their most impactful accomplishments is key. Additionally, an executive resume typically goes beyond describing someone’s expertise in the core requirements of their role – it’s also important to highlight their leadership skills in regards to building teams and functions, training or mentoring employees, and engaging with industry associations or community organizations outside of work.
What is the most challenging part about resume writing?
Learning about so many different fields! On any given day, I might be working on a resume for a nuclear engineer, a software developer, a journalist in the entertainment industry, a supply chain manager, a Chief Financial Officer, or any other role under the sun. It’s my responsibility to carefully read over the descriptions of the roles they’re targeting and research their individual fields so that I can understand the context of their responsibilities and achievements.
Do you have any hobbies? What is your favorite thing to do when you’re not writing resumes 🙂
I’ve always been passionate about creative writing, and I’m involved with a local literary arts center, where I take poetry classes. I got certified in scuba diving a couple of years ago, and although I don’t get to dive very often, nothing is better than spending time underwater! I also love reading, going to the movies, practicing yoga, and cooking new recipes.
What advice can you give for anyone considering purchasing a resume writing service and working with a professional resume writer?
Resume writing is a collaborative process. Although your writer is in charge of creating your new resume, this is an opportunity to share the in-depth story of your career, and the more relevant information you give them, the easier it is to create a resume that really makes you shine as a unique individual!
